These are mashed together with sci-fi elements, fourth wall jokes, and plain bonkers moments. In other words, don't take the mysteries seriously. You play as an American photojournalist named Naomi Hayward, who has come to town to work off an eye-watering £30,000,000 debt. Naomi is selfish, rude, and frequently the butt of the game's many jokes. She'd make a great sitcom character, as her dignity is eroded at every available opportunity. In 'The Windbreak War', she got drunk and admitted she was humourless. Less amusing though was her patronising attitude to the working classes, most notably Timothy Bateson's 'Mr.Bailey' in the same episode. Like Alf Garnett, a section of the audience were laughing with her rather than at her. Tom with his cheeky boyish wit, strength and determination. Barbara with her logical intelligence, resourcefulness and feisty charm.

Most games would be content with just that, but The Good Life isn't one to catnap on its laurels. It's also a life sim, sorta, and a murder mystery, kinda. In effect it's an RPG with no combat and an abundance of menial, tiring quests. It's a SWERY game, which perhaps explains the rest of this paragraph. A life sim/mystery/adventure game set in a town whose residents transform into cats and dogs.

Tom and Barbara's relationship was very much equal, with Barbara getting just as much say in what the couple did as Tom. So I was thrilled to discover that my local library has a few episodes on VHS, but it was with a bit of trepidation that I checked them out. Would the show be as good as I remembered?

Richard Briers is a brilliant comedy actor but I preferred his other collaboration with Esmonde and Larbey, Ever Decreasing Circles. I think The Good Life was a product of it's time and though it still rates quite highly the Good's smugness grates. They and the series is saved by the generosity of spirit of their richer neighbours Jerry and Margot.

Bored with the rat race, he wants to 'break the circle', and work at the job of life itself. This means growing vegetables, keeping pigs and chickens, making one's own clothes, building a generator etc. Another woman would tell him to go to hell but Barbara, ever the devoted wife, is fully supportive. These character were more than just one dimensional faceless general characters. Margo acted differently with Barbara than she would with Tom and at times her and Jerry, although having their problems did seem very much in love and one could very much see why they were together.

He enjoys horror, adventure, puzzle games and RPGs, and played the Japanese version of Final Fantasy VIII with a translated script he printed off from the internet. Tom has been writing about free games for PC Gamer since 2012. If he were packing for a desert island, he’d take his giant Columbo boxset and a laptop stuffed with PuzzleScript games. Felicity Kendall is charming in this show, seamlessly shifting in and out of character in a role that seems to have been written just for her.

All said I'd highly recommend the series finale, the Queen herself makes an appearance and they do a whole deep dive on the production of a studio television sitcom, worth its watch on its own for any interested in the medium. As for the show on a whole, early on Tom and Barbara are peak relationship goals, however as the show goes on Tom is unfortunately definitely not the best husband at points but Felicity Kendal is an absolute joy as Barbara through and through. Not all the jokes and lines age well, but as a whole was pleasantly enjoyable and a treat to flip on. Not if they’re looking for The Good Life to be revitalised, or substantially reimagined for theatre. This is less a play than a two-hour compendium of sitcom episodes – which, in fairness, is what Sams promises in the programme (“an homage to the characters an old-fashioned comedy”). It introduces us to Tom and Barbara , in the throes of Tom’s 40th-birthday midlife crisis.

Jerry with his cheeky chuckle, free spirited but at times stern nature and his protectiveness towards Tom and Barbara. Margo with her incessant need for a good social standing, strong sense of friendship and almost innocent nature when it comes to certain things like sex. The idea of people being self sufficient was talked about quite a bit in the 70's and there were people who really did it like the Goods. I highly recommend this excellent British comedy. Everyone has a favorite and this show is mine.

At any rate, it works, and the chemistry that happens between all of the actors is what keeps things going and makes it an enjoyable show to watch some 30 years later. So began the hugely popular John Esmonde and Bob Larbey-scripted sitcom 'The Good Life', their first for the B.B.C. after years of working for L.W.T. The premise - people quitting the rat race to become self-sufficient - was not original. Sid James and Victor Spinetti did the same thing six years earlier in 'Two In Clover'. But where 'Clover' was set on a farm, Tom and Barbara stayed in Surbiton, bringing them into conflict with the local snobs, most notably the Goods' fearsome neighbour Margo . In fairness there was also affection between the couples; when the Goods' crops were deluged in a storm, the Leadbeatters graciously helped harvest them.

Sitcom was perhaps rather beneath her talents, and I always thought of Briers as a farceur, but they gelled together well in their opposition to the world. It's no accident that all 3 non-Briers, virtual unknowns before this series, went on to have their own top-rated shows. Tied jointly with Fawlty and Blackadder for my favourite comedy series (I can't separate them because they're all so different), this is definitely the gentlest of the three, but no less piquant for all that. The storyline of two suburbanites opting out of the rat-race to try their hand at self-sufficiency provided a great platform for a lot of digs at the establishment, and the actors themselves did the rest.

On First Looking into Chapman's Homer Wikipedia

Unity and coherence are assured not only by carrying the idea of discovery all the way through the poem, but also by using the linking words "Much" and "Oft" to begin the two halves of his octave and the word "Then" to begin his sestet. Keats, in spite of his limited experience in sonnet writing before "Chapman's Homer," composed what is probably one of the finest Petrarchan sonnets in English poetry. To convey to the reader the thrill of discovery he has experienced in hearing his friend Clarke read from Chapman's Homer to him, he uses two smiles that are both beautiful and apt. "Then felt I like some watcher of the skies / When a new planet swims into his ken." The discovery of a new planet is so rare that only one had been made between ancient times and 1781, when Sir William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus. Keats, of course, may not have had Herschel in mind, but it was the rarity of such a discovery and the emotions which would overwhelm the discoverer that counted. Keats has wide experience in the reading of poetry and is familiar with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, but not until now has he had the special aesthetic enjoyment to be gained from reading Homer in the translation of George Chapman.

Progressive rock band Genesis, in their Song "Watcher of the Skies" appear to reference the poem – specifically with the line "Raising his eyes beholds a planet unknown". The title of Patrick Kavanagh's poem "On Looking into E. V. Rieu's Homer", about E. V. Rieu's Homer translations, is an allusion on the title of Keats' poem. In the Season 5 episode "Operation Righteous Cowboy Lightning" of the sitcom 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin's character, Jack Donaghy, quotes the poem while musing on his new start as an executive for the company Kabletown. Tracy Morgan's character, Tracy Jordan, later mentions "Stout Cortez" , as well.

But his reading of Chapman’s Homer opened the ‘realm of gold’ to him. His quest for poetic beauty and the delight he experienced in the fulfillment is compared to the joy and delight experienced by an astronomer when he discovered a new planet. Keats also refers to romantic poems dealing with the eerie and mystical life in the western islands. But his reading of Chapman’s translation aroused his passion in full intensity. He knew the taste of Homer, but through Chapman, the great Greek poet became more delicious. Keats could realize the quality of “pure serenity” of the poetry of Homer only when he read the Greek epic in Chapman’s translation.

But he couldn't read The Odyssey or The Iliad in the original Greek, because he didn't know Greek. So he's had to rely on translations, like Pope's, that didn't really impress him that much - and he didn't really get what was so great about Homer. One of the most popular versions at the time was by the poet Alexander Pope. Keats really didn't like Pope's translation - he thought it seemed artificial, and it was stiff and flowery. He didn't really like it because Keats was a Romantic poet, and he wanted something that didn't have artificially ornate language, because that's kind of anti-Romantic.

"On First Looking into Chapman's Homer" is a sonnet written by the English Romantic poet John Keats (1795–1821) in October 1816. It tells of the author's astonishment while he was reading the works of the ancient Greek poet Homer, who was freely translated by the Elizabethan playwright George Chapman. After reading Chapman’s translation of Homer Keats uses the imagery of discovery and exploration to convey the idea that he is capable of creating his own work and formulating his own ideas.

Considered the poet’s first mature poem, the sonnet was inspired by Keats’s having pored over a 1616 folio edition of George Chapman’s English translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey. The speaker offers an interesting speculation about this delight in having discovered the Chapman translation. He is likely attempting to demonstrate both his knowledge of science and history with such musing upon his own enthusiasm.

He never traveled to Darién but may have seen the Pacific sometime after his conquest of the Aztec Empire or during his 1524–1526 visit to Honduras. Later during his governorship of Mexico, Cortés was a major explorer of the Pacific coast of Mexico and Baja California. At the break in the sonnet — in Italian after the first eight lines, in English after twelve lines — there is a ‘turn’ or volta, after which there will be a change or new perspective on the preceding idea.

The Sestet begins with “Then”, seamlessly transitioning from the Volta and preparing us for the impact of reading Chapman’s Homer. Like them, the poet is also quite surprised and amazed to find such a piece of work which he did not explore earlier. He compares his discovery of Homer’s intellect with Cortez’s discovery of Pacific.

The celebratory sonnet was completed the same night, in time to be delivered to Clarke in the following morning's post. The first four lines discuss the poet’s travels in the ‘realms of gold’ , and the second quatrain introduces Homer, epic Greek poet who wroteThe Iliadand The Odyssey, which tell the story of the Trojan War and Odysseus’ journey home following the war. A Petrarchan sonnet must not only be unified, like any other poem, but the thought must also make a change of direction, or "turn," at the beginning of the sestet. Keats' turn is his two comparisons taken from astronomy and exploration.

A tenet of Romantic poetry is its focus on nature, on the supernatural and man’s insignificance in comparison to the natural world. It was a turbulent time when the Napoleonic Wars had not long ended and Europe was in a state of flux and unrest. In England the infamous Peterloo Massacre had occurred in August 1819, when cavalry charged into a crowd demonstrating against poor economic conditions and lack of parliamentary representation in the north of England.. “Deep-browed” also refers to Homers intellect – we still use “deep” as a colloquialism today e.g. “deep thoughts” “deep thinker”. He restlessly experimented with both verse and meter, and though he worked with Petrarchan structures he found them to be unsuitable for the English tongue, and began to favour the Shakespearian form instead. Never the less, Keats achieves technical perfection in this Petrarchan structured poem. The first part of a Petrarchan sonnet, the Octet , usually serves as a question or presents a problem to be then followed by an answer or a solution in the Sestet .

The poem On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer was written by John Keats in 1816 A.D. In this poem, Keats who was a Romantic poet is complementing the works of Homer and Chapman as well. It's like if people tell you over and over again how there's this amazing song, you have to hear it - like '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction'; that's a good song. Then suddenly you hear the original; you hear the Rolling Stones, and you get it. That's what reading Chapman's translation was like for Keats. The aim is to present poems — both great and maybe not-so-great — put them in context, analyse their structure and meaning, and maybe offer a word or two of criticism.

In his excitement, Keats substituted the name of Cortez for Balboa in his sonnet. In his school days he had read about Cortez' conquest of Mexico and Balboa's discovery of the Pacific Ocean on an expedition in Darien, an old name for part of Central America, in William Robertson's History of America. In search of a historical example of an exciting discovery, Keats put Cortez where historically Cortez never was and made him seem to be the discoverer of the Pacific Ocean. It is not known whether Keats or any of his friends ever became aware of the error.

He also makes it part of himself; absorbing it shows the extent to which he is devoted to art – he literally lives and breathes it. The octave offers the poet as a literary explorer, but the volta brings in the discovery of Chapman's Homer, the subject of which is further expanded through the use of imagery and comparisons which convey the poet's sense of awe at the discovery. He wrote this sonnet after staying up all night reading Chapman's Homer, and thinking, 'Oh my God, this is amazing. With Chapman's translation, he understands why Homer is so awesome, and he uses a bunch of metaphors and similes to get across that sense of discovery that he experienced.

Additional materials, such as the best quotations, synonyms and word definitions to make your writing easier are also offered here. This is also a very visual experience, and Keats emphasises Cortez’s eyes by calling them “eagle eyes”. This suggests that Cortez’s eyes are keen, observing strongly and are paying close attention to detail, just as Keats thoroughly observed all of Chapman’s Homer, so much so that he felt as though he was breathing it in and literally surviving though it.

I am a retired librarian, living in a village in Leicestershire. I write fiction and poetry, plus articles on literature, history, and much more besides. Keats and his readers are truly in a new world – a rather cinematic one.

The poem of my choice is a sonnet by John Keats titled On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer, which is focused on a piece of poetry describing the importance and the impact of poetry in general. It is important to note that “the sonnet has been a popular literary form in English since the sixteenth century, when it was adopted from the Italian sonnetto, meaning “little song” (Meyer & Miller, 2019, p. 484). The first thing that one notices when reading the poem is the fact that it is an Italian sonnet with its two distinct parts. It is stated that “the first eight lines typically rhyme abbaabba.

“On First Looking into Chapman's Homer” Poetic Devices & Figurative Language

Loud and bold — Keats here contrasts the poetic voice he hears in Chapman with the other versions with which he had heretofore been familiar. Of course, “Balboa” would have been too many syllables so “Cortez” works better – history aside. However, Keats surely did not intend to engage in any perfidy with his mistake; he probably thought he was correct in assigning Cortez the discovery instead of Balboa. Oddly enough, Keats did, however, correctly designate "Darien" as the mountain from which the explorer Balboa first spied the Pacific. He has thereby visited a vast number of nations, states, and kingdoms owing to his metaphoric travels. He then asserts that he has visited many of the "western islands" off the coast of Greece, where the sun god, Apollo, would have held court, especially for poets.

The Uni-Q design is particularly useful in a center-channel speaker. All crossover networks in a loudspeaker cause the response of each driver to roll off gradually above and below their crossover frequencies. Because this results in response overlaps between what are usually physically separated drivers, interference patterns develop off-axis at and around the crossover point. This isn’t generally an issue in a speaker with vertically arrayed drive units, assuming your ears are located at an appropriate height.

It includes a pair of 8-inch low-frequency drivers, one each above and below its Uni-Q. Metal outrigger feet, with spikes that can be easily tightened from above, provide added stability. The woofers in the R Series are also said to draw from lessons learned during the Blade’s development, both in refinements to the Uni-Q and the R’s seamless, concave aluminum woofer cones. The R400b subwoofer employs a pair of 9-inch opposing woofers linked together internally by a metal rod—a technique also used in the Blade. Instead of the usual strapping bars that connect such posts in other speakers when single wiring is desired, the linkage is internal. Turning external knobs between the posts either connects or separates the terminals. But if you elect to biamp the speakers, be sure to double-check to ensure that you have the terminals separated; unlike those ubiquitous strapping bars, you can’t tell just by looking.

Delivery time is estimated using our proprietary method which is based on the buyer's proximity to the item location, the shipping service selected, the seller's shipping history, and other factors. The R400b sealed-box subwoofer mates each of its two 9-inch drivers to its own 250-watt, Class D amplifier. A non-defeatable fourth-order low-pass filter is variable from 40 hertz to 140 Hz. There’s also a level control, a switch offering a 40-Hz boost of +6 or +12 decibels, and a two-position phase control. One of three floorstanding R Series models, the R900 is the flagship of the range.

In the late 1980s, KEF introduced a new concentric driver that placed the tweeter in the throat of the midrange cone. Dubbed Uni-Q, the design has been continually refined for over 20 years and remains the centerpiece of most KEF loudspeakers. Great product - impeccable sound and sleek, great looking form factor. Sound is what you expect fro mKEF which is impressive given the slim profile of these speakers. My impression is only dampened a bit by the fact that my T2 sub did not ship with a power cord.

The system was driven by a Parasound Halo A51 power amp and an Integra DHC-9.8 surround preamp/processor. The latter’s Audyssey room EQ was not used in the review. The eclectic mix of cables that moved in and out of the system, some of them vintage, some fairly new, were from AudioQuest, Monster, Cardas, and Kimber. The R Series is said to source its technological DNA from KEF’s current $30,000/pair flagship, the Blade. Much of that technology lies in the latest Uni-Q driver, which operates as a virtual point source.

Ditto even if you even simply biwire; leave the terminals connected and accidentally reverse the polarity of one of the biwire leads, and you could trash an amp. The provided spikes were used, but the port plugs were not. The closest sidewall was about 2 feet from the right speaker, and the two speakers were toed-in toward the center listening seat, located about 10 feet from the speakers. The R600c center was placed on a low stand beneath the projection screen, tilted slightly upward. The R100s, used as surrounds in the review system, were located on 25-inch stands near the back of the 25-foot-long room. The R400b subwoofer was placed behind the center speaker and closer to the front wall.

Really great loudspeakers simply melt away, leaving you with just the music. A pristine voice, perfectly rendered layers of instruments you can lose yourself in, sound so clear it’s as though the artist is there with you. This is what great loudspeakers with the best technology deliver.

Wireless HiFi Speakers

In the best center-channel speakers, this is addressed by a three-way design, with a midrange and tweeter positioned vertically between two flanking woofers. The Uni-Q also eliminates this concern, but in perhaps an even more elegant fashion with its nearly coincident midrange and tweeter. While the woofers and the Uni-Q will still be horizontally arrayed, this will normally be less of an issue because of the longer wavelengths involved at the lower crossover frequency between these drivers. If you prefer more frontal 'slam' for movie special effects and a system that generally plays louder, the T205 system has larger T301 speakers for the front satellite and centre channel speakers. The R900s were positioned 9 feet apart and about 5 feet out from my room’s 15.5-foot-wide short wall, directly to the left and right of my projection screen .

The rear ports of all the R Series designs, apart from the port-less, sealed-box subwoofer, may be partially or fully blocked as needed to accommodate each speaker’s low-frequency response to your room. To me, it is significantly larger sounding than the space consumed. It's also an EXCELLENT solution where aesthetic _has_ to be a concern. The build, design, and sound quality from this set shows considerable time and engineering resources spent wisely.

An 80-Hz crossover was selected at the pre/pro when the sub was in use, and the sub’s (non-defeatable) internal crossover was turned to its 140-Hz maximum. All but one of the full-range speakers in the R Series are three-way vented designs employing dedicated woofers and a 5-inch Uni-Q midrange/tweeter. The exception is the small, two-way R100 surround, which has a slightly different 5.25-inch Uni-Q designed to extend its coverage through the bass range. If you’ve been passionate about audio for more than a few years, or can name five loudspeaker companies with names that don’t rhyme with rose and begin with a B, you’ve certainly heard of KEF.

I purchased these somewhat on blind faith, without actually listening to them. Generally, that would never happen in a million years, but this was going to be a highly visible addition to a bedroom flanked in vibrant grey and white. The choice of speakers was more to appease, than anything else. Astonishing levels from something that is so very thin. It's thicker than the OLED it is flanking, but it's close enough not to distract from the room in the slightest. The mounting system is fantastic, and I'll likely move the LCR over to a wall mounted solution, but as it stands now, everything looks amazing on the supplied brackets.

Ditto even if you even simply biwire; leave the terminals connected and accidentally reverse the polarity of one of the biwire leads, and you could trash an amp. The T205 system substitutes a pair of the larger T301 Satellite Speaker for the front satellite, T301c Centre Channel Speakers, and T101 Satellite Speakers, supported by the same discreet high performance T2 Subwoofer. Since 1961, from our UK home, we have created remarkable – award-winning – speakers. KEF exists to fill rooms with music as it was made to be heard, to move souls with truly authentic soundscapes. Exploring the conduit of sound and how it inspires different people, places, designs and experiences; from the far-flung fringes to the new frontiers.

Ultra Slim profile 5.0 Home Theater System

In the late 1980s, KEF introduced a new concentric driver that placed the tweeter in the throat of the midrange cone. Dubbed Uni-Q, the design has been continually refined for over 20 years and remains the centerpiece of most KEF loudspeakers. Great product - impeccable sound and sleek, great looking form factor. Sound is what you expect fro mKEF which is impressive given the slim profile of these speakers. My impression is only dampened a bit by the fact that my T2 sub did not ship with a power cord.

BEST PRODUCT IN THE 5.1 LOUDSPEAKER SYSTEM CATEGORY FOR 2011-12 - EISA AWARD

The resulting response is as clean, accurate and distortion-free as a quality conventional speaker, with none of the bulk. With deceptively compact T101s front and rear as well as the centre channel and the discreet T-2 subwoofer, this system is powerful enough to fill most normal rooms with compelling 3D sound. The R600c center employs two 5-inch woofers, one each on either side of its Uni-Q.

Really great loudspeakers simply melt away, leaving you with just the music. A pristine voice, perfectly rendered layers of instruments you can lose yourself in, sound so clear it’s as though the artist is there with you. This is what great loudspeakers with the best technology deliver.

Your music follows you everywhere you go with the exquisitely detailed sound quality of KEF headphones. Crafted from premium materials for sophisticated looks and a precise sound, they offer the ultimate in performance, comfort and style. Designed by Michael Young in collaboration with the KEF product design team, this contemporary design addition to the KEF family defies the limits of audio performance with its iconic slim structure. The LS60 Wireless is a celebration of 60 years of sound innovation with a clear eye on the future high-fidelity experience. The T105 system combines slimline surround and centre channels with a compact sub to produce full scale cinematic sound.

The generous size of the sophisticated new 25mm (1in.) vented tweeter specially developed for the T Series allows exceptionally accurate reproduction, especially of the human voice. KEF's revolutionary T Series is in a different league from any low profile speaker you've ever heard. By subscribing you agree to KEF's Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions.

KEF Support

I purchased these somewhat on blind faith, without actually listening to them. Generally, that would never happen in a million years, but this was going to be a highly visible addition to a bedroom flanked in vibrant grey and white. The choice of speakers was more to appease, than anything else. Astonishing levels from something that is so very thin. It's thicker than the OLED it is flanking, but it's close enough not to distract from the room in the slightest. The mounting system is fantastic, and I'll likely move the LCR over to a wall mounted solution, but as it stands now, everything looks amazing on the supplied brackets.

Beautifully designed and engineered to digitally stream the music you love in true Hi-Fi sound. Bring music and movies to life with KEF HiFi Speakers. One of three floorstanding R Series models, the R900 is the flagship of the range.

kef home theater speaker system

The system was driven by a Parasound Halo A51 power amp and an Integra DHC-9.8 surround preamp/processor. The latter’s Audyssey room EQ was not used in the review. The eclectic mix of cables that moved in and out of the system, some of them vintage, some fairly new, were from AudioQuest, Monster, Cardas, and Kimber. The R Series is said to source its technological DNA from KEF’s current $30,000/pair flagship, the Blade. Much of that technology lies in the latest Uni-Q driver, which operates as a virtual point source.

HOME THEATER PRODUCTS OF THE YEAR - ABOUT.COM

The rear ports of all the R Series designs, apart from the port-less, sealed-box subwoofer, may be partially or fully blocked as needed to accommodate each speaker’s low-frequency response to your room. To me, it is significantly larger sounding than the space consumed. It's also an EXCELLENT solution where aesthetic _has_ to be a concern. The build, design, and sound quality from this set shows considerable time and engineering resources spent wisely.
